The EGGspander- Is It Worth It?
The long awaited Big Green Egg Eggspander system has finally hit the UK. From the initial unboxing, it seems the wait was worth it.
The EGGspander kit is composed of 5 different stainless-steel elements which revolutionises the EGGS cooking capacity. This kit combines the 2-Piece Multi-Level Rack and the 1-Piece convEGGtor Basket and includes 2 Stainless Steel Half Grids for one complete cooking system. It is easily configured for multi-level direct and indirect cooking, direct “Cowboy style” lower rack cooking, and useful as a convEGGtor Basket.
ConvEGGtor basket:
This is my favourite element with the EGGspander kit. To remove the ConvEGGtor (plate setter) in and out of the EGG using the handles makes the swap from direct and indirect cooking a lot easier and convenient.
This makes the removal of the hot stone a lot safer and secure.
Multi-level direct and indirect cooking:
Revolutionising the Big Green Eggs cooking capabilities, splitting the eggs cooking surfaces enables you to cook both direct and indirect. Direct grilling using either the cast iron half moon grid, stainless steel grid or perforated half grid to use the flame/fire with direct exposure to get a high intense heat- ideal for steak, burgers and quick-cooking foods. Using the half moon plate setter, you can split the grill to cook at the same time indirect foods to deflect the heat and cook in a convection process.
Cast Iron Half Grids:
For perfect sear marks on your food, utilise the superior heat conductivity of the dual-sided Cast Iron Grids as an alternative to the primary Stainless Cooking Grids. The cast iron gets very hot and retains the heat, turning it into a perfect searing surface. Flip the grid over for a flat searing surface for fish or seafood.
Stainless Steel Half Grids:
Accommodate multi-tier and multi-zone cooking set-ups. Made with 304 stainless steel, these Grids will hold up to extreme temperatures and are dishwasher safe for easy clean up. Two Stainless Half Grids are included in the 5 Piece EGGspander Kit.
Half Moon Baking Stones:
Turning the egg into a firebrick oven, adding half-moon baking stones means you can cook indirect on one half of the egg, while keeping the other half of the grid available for grilling meats or vegetables. The stones are made with Big Green Egg Ceramics and when two are paired it creates a no burn zone convection cooking- as when using a convEGGtor there is always the risk of burning the meat along the edges. This is prevented by using two Half Baking Stones that offer you more cooking surface in slow cooking at higher temperatures.
Sliding Top Grill:
The retractable grill enables you to move the surface back revealing the cooking levels below while having food cooking on the top. This furthers the multilevel cooking but providing a third level. The elevated sliding cooking grid with a 10cm clearance for easy access- perfect for expanding your cooking surface to accommodate more hungry people.
The stainless-steel frame holds the interchangeable EGGcessories for over 40 different cooking setups.
So, is the new EGGspander worth it? Short answer, YES.
